California Sea Lion
  • California Sea Lions are members of the “eared” seal family.
  • Unlike their “earless” counterparts, eared seals are able to rotate their hindquarters, allowing them to “walk” or lope on land.
  • Males are up to 8 feet (2.5 m) and weigh 900 lbs (405 kg).
  • The smaller females are up to 5′ 6″ (1.7 m) and weigh 250 lbs (113 kg).
  • Their extensive diet includes at least 50 species of fish as well as mollusks, squid and octopus.

  • Stellar sea lions are the largest of the “eared” seals.
  • Unlike their “earless” counterparts, eared seals are able to rotate their hindquarters, allowing them to “walk” or lope on land.
  • Males are often 2 or 3 times larger than females, averaging 8.5 to 11 feet (2.6 – 3.4 m) and weigh up to 2200 lbs (1000 kg)
  • Females are 6 to 7 feet (1.8 – 2.1 m) and weigh 600 to 800 lbs (270 – 360 kg).
  • Favoring coastal waters with rocky shores, these animals eat fish, squid and mollusks.
Harbour Seals
  • Harbour seals are plentiful here year round.
  • These curious and often comical mammals are members of the earless or “true” seal family.
  • Feeding primarily on fish, adult harbour seals are around 5 to 6 feet (1.8 m) long and weigh in the neighbourhood of 250 lbs (113 kg ).
  • Although both sexes are similar in size, the average lifespan is 30 years for females and 20 years for males.
