TRANSIENT WHALES
There are 3 kinds of killer whales:
Residents, Transients and Offshores. Although the groups appear to look
identical, there are important differences. The residents, known as J-Clan, are
local animals that live in large family groups and eat fish exclusively.
Transients are roaming meat eaters usually found in groups of 6 or less.
Slightly larger than the residents, transient Orcas can also be found singly.
Offshores are a mysterious, seldom seen group currently thought to eat both fish
and meat.
PORPOISE
Porpoise (and Killer Whales) are members of the dolphin family. Two types of
porpoise are commonly seen: the exuberant Dall’s Porpoise and the more reserved
Harbour Porpoise. The playful Pacific White Side Dolphins, although less
frequent visitors, provide thrilling acrobatic displays when encountered.
MINKE Whales
Minke whaes are baleen whales with two blowholes and plates of baleen (a
substance similar to fingernail tissue) hanging from the upper jaw. Feeding
mainly on small fish and krill, this shy whale averages 30 feet (10 m) and
weighs around 10 tons (9000 kg)
GRAY Whales
Gray Whales are baleen whales with two blowholes and plates of baleen (a
substance similar to fingernail tissue) suspended from the upper jaw. Famous for
their extensive migrations, these ancient mariners feed on bottom dwelling
crustaceans called amphipods. An adult gray whale has a 70 year life span,
averages 50 feet (15 m ) and weighs around 35 tons
(32,000 kg )
